BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas – Recreation is often the key to a healthy social life, regardless of your age.
But often the options are limited for people with disabilities.
Well, a recreation therapist and the city of College Station have joined forces to offer more comprehensive programs!
Boccia Ball is a game of precision and strategy.
Fiona Allen, owner of Avocation Therapy, trains her staff on the ins and outs of this inclusive sport.
âIt was really fun,â said Brooke Littlefield, assistant recreation supervisor, Department of Parks and Recreation. “I need training, but as the season goes on, I hope to increase my skills”,
As a team, Vocational therapy and the City of College Station are working together to ensure that people with disabilities can enjoy this Paralympic sport.
âI love boccia because it’s so inclusive. It’s designed for people with physical disabilities who have all four limbs affected. But anyone can play boccia,â Allen said.
This modified version of the game uses softer balls and everyone is seated in a chair to include people in wheelchairs as well.
Alma Contreras-Vanegas says activities like this have done wonders for her daughter Sammy, who suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and developmental delays.
âFiona really knew how to tailor things for her, to be successful in all of these activities,â Conteras-Venegas said.
Fiona has traveled the world to help Paralympians compete in the sport and make sure all people with disabilities can play too.
âIt’s so wonderful to see a person with a physical disability achieve what they are capable of knowing that you have helped them develop their strengths,â said Allen.
Classes are open to all ages and run from Monday evening until November 1.
