New lawn game rentals from the Oshkosh Public Library can add to the summer fun

OSHKOSH – It’s the season for backyard barbecues and get-togethers, and staff at the Oshkosh Public Library want to add lawn games to more outdoor gatherings.

The library offers its customers the opportunity to discover popular lawn games. Lisa Sumter Voss, assistant director of library development, said the addition to the catalog helps make summer entertainment more affordable.

“A lot of times people are looking for activities that people can enjoy during these events, but going out and buying a few lawn games can be a bit pricey, and then you have to store them for the rest of the year,” Sumter Voss said. . “There are a lot of benefits to offering something like this to the public.”

The library has seven games available for free: Croquet, cornhole, Giant Toppling Timbers (like Giant Jenga), garden dice, bocce ball, giant wooden dominoes game, and potato sack racing bags in burlap.

Trying to reach the top will be tricky.

Anyone with a library card can check out up to two games for two weeks at a time.

Sumter Voss said the move came after the library added a collection of board games for rent in 2020 that proved popular.

It’s also part of a larger trend she’s seen in libraries across the country adding “less traditional collections,” she said. OPL and other libraries in the Winnefox library system also offers “Try it Yourself (TIY) kits” for kids and adults to experience things like stargazing, jewelry making, playing the ukulele, and other hands-on activities.

“People are very interested in experiments, Sumter Voss said. “We need to look at the way people live today and evolve to… add value to people in different ways.”

Offers such as TIY kits and lawn games allow people to try something without having to buy it.

“Maybe you look at it and like it so much you end up buying one,” she said. “At least you have the chance to try it out before you realize it’s not for you and your family.”

Lawn games, TIY kits and all OPL collections are available in the library’s catalog system. Visit or call the library at 920-236-5203 to learn more.
