The Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs did what good bulldogs do today in the semi-finals of the MSHSL Class 3A State Football Tournament. They got the ball back.
The Bulldogs had 5 interceptions en route to a 28-6 victory over the Annandale Cardinals at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.
Annandale had more rushing yards, more passing yards, more total offensive yards, but more points wins.
Following a scoreless first quarter, PEM posted an 82-yard four-game drive that took 1:11 to reach the end zone. Quarterback Connor McGuire (6’2, 180, Sr) joined Peyton Schumacher (5’10, 162, Sr.) for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Senior Glenn Schmidt added an extra point.
About a minute later, Schumacher intercepted a pass and scored from 23 yards. Schmidt added the extra point to make it 14-0 Bulldogs.
With 25 seconds left at the half, Annandale capped a 67-yard drive in 6 games with a 6-yard pass from Cason Gagnon to Thomas Westman. The extra kick failed, bringing the score to 14-6 at halftime.
The Bulldogs scored with 4:22 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run from McGuire. Schmidt’s kick was good. Their final score came with 3:24 left in the game on a 48-yard pass from McGuire to Jason Fells (5’9, 160, Sr.).
Both defenses were stingy against the run. Annandale was 84 yards, PEM 65 yards.
The Cardinals threw for 200 yards. Gagnon finished 9th out of 21 with a TD and two INTs thrown. Two other team members threw 3 more interceptions.
The McGuire Bulldogs finished 11 of 19 for 191 yards, 2 scores, 2 INT.
Total yards were 284 to 256 in favor of Annandale. PEM scored 14 points on turnovers to 0 for the Cardinals.
The Bulldogs lost to Lake City and Cannon Falls during the regular season. Avenged the two losses in the playoffs.
They will face Dassel-Cokato, ranked No.1 and undefeated, in the Prep Bowl at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021 for the MSHSL State Class 3A Championship.
The Chargers scored two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to beat the Esko EsKOmos 21-14 in the other semi today.
