Bantamweight Kayla Gomez (El Paso, TX) got Team USA off to a winning start with a unanimous decision victory over Yan Cai of China to claim the gold medal. Gomez, who was down 3-2 after the first round, came back in the second round to grab four of the judges’ five cards before taking all five in the final round.
2022 World Champion Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) continued her winning streak with her own unanimous decision victory. Ellis led 4-1 after the first round, but then pulled away with a dominating performance to take all the judges’ cards in the final two rounds to claim gold.
The first of two USA vs. USA finals saw light welterweight duos Emilio Garcia (Laredo, Texas) and Jonathan Mansour (San Diego, Calif.) battle it out for the gold medal. Garcia took an early lead going 5-0 in the first round; however, Mansour came back stronger in the second to close the gap with the score at 3-2. With the final round being the deciding factor, Garcia stepped up and won the round and the gold, his first elite international gold. Mansour will leave Pueblo with the silver medal, his first elite international medal.
Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio) and Stephanie Simon (Miami, Fla.) squared off for the welterweight title. McCane took the lead after a 4-1 first round and extended his lead after a strong second round that culminated in a 5-0 round. McCane closed the fight with another 4-1 round, resulting in a unanimous decision and a gold medal. Simon, who was making her international debut, settled for silver.
2021 Elite World Championship silver medalist Omari Jones (Orlando, Fla.) closed out the day for Team USA by winning the team’s fifth gold medal of the tournament. Jones took a decisive lead after the first round and continued to dominate in the second round. The final round saw Magomed Schachidov of Germany return, however, it was too late and Jones was awarded the gold medal.
The last American to compete today, Julius Ballo (San Diego, Calif.), put in a strong performance against Azerbaijan’s Umid Rustamov but fell short in a 3-2 final decision, earning him the gold medal. silver, his first international elite medal. .
Team USA leaves Pueblo with five gold, three silver and seven bronze.
