The International Boccia Sports Federation (BISFed) has announced dates for a series of major events planned after this year’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a series of cancellations of BISFed-sanctioned competitions with events canceled in 2020 and early this year.
But BISFed has confirmed its intention to host four tournaments in the space of four and a half weeks in the last two months of the year.
The Asia-Oceania Regional Championships will take place in the United Arab Emirates from November 13-20.
Spain is next set to host the European Regional Championships November 22-30 before Bahrain hosts the Asian Youth Paralympic Games from December 1-10.
The final dates to be confirmed by BISFed are for the US Regional Championships which will take place from December 6 to 14.
BISFed says registration will begin soon, but admits dates are subject to change due to “uncertain times” caused by the global health crisis.
All of the boccia’s qualifying events for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games took place before the start of 2020, when the pandemic began.
The Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from August 24 to September 5 after the 2020 Games were postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19.
It had been hoped that the Póvoa World Open in Portugal, which was scheduled to take place July 12-19, would offer a warm-up event before the Paralympic Games, but this was canceled due to the increase in coronavirus cases in the host country.
The first three events of 2021 sanctioned by BISFed, in France, Spain and Croatia, had already been canceled.
