Sports Mole examines how Barcelona could line up against Mallorca if Lionel Messi misses with injury.
Barcelona are set to resume their La Liga 2019-20 campaign with a clash against Mallorca June 13.
The Spanish champions have not been in action since their 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on March 7 as the coronavirus outbreak has seen the majority of football postponed across the world.
However, European football is slowly coming back and Quique Setien, who currently leads La Liga, is expected to continue his season against Mallorca next weekend.
Barça could do without the services of Lionel messi, however, with the club confirming on Friday that the Argentine was training “in isolation” after suffering “a minor quadriceps injury”.
Here, Sporty Taupe examines how the Catalan giants could line up for their first game if Messi is unable to prove his fitness ahead of the contest.
Outside: Clement Lenglet (suspension), Ousmane Dembele (tendon)
Doubtful: Lionel Messi (thigh)
Barça will be permanently deprived of Clément Lenglet and Ousmane Dembele for the clash with Mallorca. Indeed, booking the first against Sociedad the last time ruled out the Frenchman by suspension, while the latter is still recovering from his latest hamstring problem.
Luis Suarez was declared fit, however, after a long period of inactivity. The Uruguay international has not played since early January after undergoing knee surgery, but he has been given the green light to return to action against Mallorca, which is a huge boost for the Spain champions .
Messi’s absence would open up a spot alongside Antoine Griezmann and Suarez in attack, and Ansu fati could be given the green light. The 17-year-old has scored five times in 24 appearances for Barca this quarter and has featured on the right although he has been widely used as a striker on the left side.
Setien also has the option of upgrading to a midfielder four and naming Griezmann and Suarez in attack, although the likes of Ivan Rakitic and Arthur struggled to keep a regular spot.
Somewhere else, Samuel umtiti is expected to take Lenglet’s place in central defense, while Sergi Roberto could receive the green light at the rear right Nelson semedo, which continues to be linked to estrangement.
