Musanze district dominated the first round of the boccia sports championship which took place on Sunday, January 30 in Rulindo district.
Boccia is a precision ball sport that is played indoors while seated in a chair or wheelchair.
Globally, sport is contested locally, nationally and internationally by athletes with severe physical disabilities.
In the local championship organized by the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) which attracted mentally disabled athletes from three districts, Musanze beat Gakenke and Rulindo 12-1 and 11-6 points respectively to come away with maximum points in the next round. games that will take place on February 26.
“We played well. Part of the victory was due to the good formation, and we are generally happy to have come this far,” said Musanze head coach Patrick Nkusi.
Musanze district leads the national rankings with 23 points, followed by Rulindo with 19 points while Gakenke has two points.
Boccia was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy, but now includes athletes with other severe disabilities.
In 1984 it became a Paralympic sport.
