South Range Raiders vs. Springfield Tigers WKBN football Game of the Week August 20, 2021



NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The lights of the game in Springfield and Game of the Week weren’t too bright as South Range beat the Tigers, 41-21. The Raiders’ monumental victory ended Springfield’s 21-game winning streak in the regular season.

Raiders quarterback Billy Skripac threw for 229 yards on 13 of 16 passes while rushing for 93 strips. South Range hobbyhorse Dylan Dominguez ran the ball 26 times for 185 yards (3 TDs). Ayden Leon caught 5 passes for 107 yards.

South Range finished with 66 offensive plays; while the Tigers only had 30 scrum games. The Raiders also converted 25 first downs while completing 10 of 13 third downs.

South Range has chosen to receive the opening kickoff. The Raiders’ offense possessed the ball for 13 games and advanced pigskin inside the Tiger’s 10-yard line. Springfield’s Marshall Yelkin-Franceschelli caused a fumble as teammate Joey Sandine recovered the turnover at the 1-yard line.

After converting two straight first downs on a pass and executed by Beau Brungard, the Tigers were forced to kick after the South Range defense tightened.

The Raiders finished their next offensive possession on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Billy Skripac to Ayden Leon to take the lead, 7-0, in the second quarter. The drive took 10 games to complete their 69-yard drive. With their first two possessions, the Raiders converted 4 of 5 third down conversions, 9 first downs and racked up 141 total yards (61 assists, 80 rushing).

However, it didn’t take long for Springfield to respond as in their third scrimmage game Beau Brungard found Seandelle Gardner on a 75-yard pass and caught to tie the game at 7 midway through the second quarter.

Back, South Range completed a 60-yard, 7-playout practice that was capped by Dylan Dominguez’s 1-yard rush to regain the lead at 14-7.

Following an interception of Brungard by Cory Penick, Skripac completed 3 passes on the drive that followed (completing a pair at Leon for 17 and 37 yards). The No.17 picked it up for 19 yards to give the Raiders a 21-7 halftime lead.

After an interception by Joey Plunkett deep in Raiders territory, Skripac completed a 76-yard touchdown to Shane Lindstrom to give the Raiders a 20-point (27-7) lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the ensuing kick-off, Joey Sandine returned the kick 47 yards to give Springfield short ground with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter. Three games later, Brungard scampered 11 yards to pay for dirt to reduce the lead to 13 points (27-14).

South Range responded to the Tigers’ score with one of their own with Dominguez coming in from 4 yards to take a 20-point lead (34-14). Before the scoring play, Dominguez traveled 37 yards to put the Raiders on the ground at the Tiger’s 4-yard line.

Returning came Springfield’s high-octane offense, Brungard logged in on three passes that resulted in first downs. On the 6th game of practice, Brungard dived to 5 meters to reduce the deficit to 13 points once again (34-21) with 9:27 to go.

The Raiders ended the game with a 13-game, 73-yard practice that took over 9 minutes. Dominguez finished the run with a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Raiders the first week of competition with an exclamation mark. South Range won, 41-21.
